MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (AP) — Two suspects face charges after a suburban St. Louis police officer was shot twice in the leg while watching a parking lot for car break-ins.
The shooting happened early Thursday in Maryland Heights. The wounded officer is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 17-year-old Menuis Ellis is charged with two counts of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and stealing. He is jailed on $1 million bond.
The other suspect, 26-year-old Davina Parker, is charged with stealing. Her bond was set at $2,500.
Police Chief Bill Carson says the officer and his partner were on special assignment working to reduce car break-ins. About 20 cars were targeted last week alone.
The wounded officer’s partner returned fire but did not hit anyone.
