The Waynesville, Missouri School District has reported an employee has contracted whooping cough.
The worker will remain on leave until cleared by doctors and the district is notifying parents of students that may have had contact with the worker.
Children who are up-to-date on their shots are considered to be at a low risk of getting the disease.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says the best way to protect against pertussis (whooping cough) is by getting vaccinated.
