A man who was shot by Springfield Police during a standoff Sunday has died.
Douglas J. Knakmuhs, 40, died at a Springfield hospital.
Police Chief Paul Williams says an officer spotted Knakmuhs at the Kum & Go store at Kansas and College Sunday.
Knackmuhs was wanted for questioning in a shooting and had a parole violation for dangerous drugs.
Williams says the officer tried to stop him, but Knakmuhs opened fire.
The shots put a bullet hole in the officer’s pant leg, but he was not hurt.
Knakmuhs then broke into a home in the 1800-block of West Elm and took a man hostage.
A SWAT team quickly surrounded the home and went inside.
Williams says Knakmuhs had a gun to the man’s head in the kitchen.
But the hostage fought back, wrestling with Knakmuhs over the gun.
A police officer then shot Knakmuhs and the hostage was able to get away.
Knakmuhs was taken to the hospital where he later died.
The hostage was not hurt.
The two officers are on administrative leave while police wrap up their investigation.

A man who fired shots at an officer and held another man at gunpoint is in the hospital after he was shot by police.
It started Sunday afternoon when an officer approached a man at the Kum & Go store at Kansas and College.
The man fired shots at the officer and ran away.
He later broke into a home in the 1800 block of West Elm and held a man hostage.
KY3 reports police then surrounded the home, and at some point, shot the suspect.

The hostage was not hurt.
