Springfield Police have released more information on a deadly officer-involved shooting Thursday night.

Police say Seth S. Rynio, 21, from Lebanon was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire with police.

It happened as police were responding to reports of a intoxicated man causing a disturbance at the Downing Street Pour House near Battlefield and Glenstone.

Someone called 911 to say they saw a man with a handgun near the Barnes and Noble store.

Police say they arrived and found a man hiding in the bushes.

A Springfield-Greene County Park Ranger who was in the area at the time arrived as backup.

When the Park Ranger drove to the side of the building where Rynio was, he opened fire, hitting the ranger several times.

Two Springfield Police Officers returned fire, killing Rynio.

The Park Ranger’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.

On November 11, 2021, at approximately 9:39 p.m., Springfield Police Officers were dispatched to Downing Street Pour House located at 1724 E. Battlefield for a check a person call.  A male subject at the location was reported to be intoxicated and causing a disturbance.   The male left the location when 911 was called.  Information was provided to 911 that the male ran to the east side of Barnes & Noble located at 3055 S. Glenstone, and a witness reported the male was armed with a handgun.

Officers observed the male hiding in some bushes on the southeast corner of Barnes & Noble.   Officers began forming a perimeter around the business in preparation to contact the male.  A Springfield-Greene County Park Ranger responded to the call to assist.   The Park Ranger drove to the east side of the business where the male fired multiple gunshots at the Park Ranger.   The Park Ranger was struck by several bullets.  Springfield Police Officers who were positioned on the south side of the business observed the shots being fired.  Two Springfield Police Officers returned fire and shot the suspect.  The Park Ranger was transported to a local hospital for treatment, and his injuries are not considered life-threatening.  The male suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deceased male was identified as Seth S. Rynio, a 21-year-old male from Lebanon, Missouri. Next of kin notifications have been made to Rynio’s family.

Both Springfield Police Department Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.  This case will be presented to the Greene County Prosecutor for review and determination of any criminal charges.

Springfield-Greene County Park Rangers are law enforcement officers, commissioned through the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and dispatched through Springfield-Greene County 9-1-1. Park Rangers have jurisdiction in both the city and county, not limited to parks. While on patrol, rangers often provide backup to officers with Springfield Police, Greene County Sheriff, area School Resource Officers, Springfield Airport Police and other agencies within Greene County.

The Springfield Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is investigating this incident. Detectives are asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).

This incident marks the 22nd homicide for 2021.

A park ranger with the Springfield-Greene County Park Board is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries today after being shot during an incident Thursday night.

The ranger, whose name has not been released, was providing backup to Springfield Police Department officers near the intersection of South Glenstone and East Battlefield just before 10 p.m.

Springfield Police are investigating the incident. All questions about the incident should be directed to Springfield Police Department.

Park Rangers have jurisdiction in both the city and county, not limited to parks. Springfield Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting Thursday night.

Police got a disturbance call about someone at the Downing Street Pourhouse Restaurant.

Lieutenant Mark Foos says police caught up with the suspect near Barnes and Noble at Glenstone and Battlefield.

KY3 reports shots rang out, and a parks department officer who showed up to help was shot.

His injuries aren’t life threatening.

Police returned fire, shooting the suspect.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
