Missouri House Considers Ban On Electronic Voting Machines

(KTTS News/MNN) — The Missouri House has adopted an amendment aimed at improving election security.

Republican Brad Hudson says it would prohibit the use of ballot machines that store voter data electronically.

Hudson says those machines could lead to inaccurate elections and prevent recounts.

“I’m trying to remove software from being in between a voter and the vote they would like to cast.”

But Democrat Peter Merideth says electronic ballot machines don’t prevent recounts, like Hudson says.

“This idea that the gentlemen is just trying to create a paper trail by getting rid of these machines that you use to vote…The machines have a paper trail! Why is this ignored? I vote on those machines and I like those machines personally. And I know a lot of my constituents do. I actually trust the way that the machine marks the ballot better than my hand will.”

The Missouri News Network says the House must vote once more before the amended bill can move on to the Senate.
