(KTTS News) — The Greene County Prosecutor says an officer-involved shooting on the parking lot of the Bass Pro Shops Catalog Outlet last month was justified.
The ruling clears Springfield Police Corporal Thomas Jordan of any wrongdoing in the shooting death of Joshua A. Michael, 37, from Springfield.
In court records, Greene County Prosecutor Dan Patterson says Jordan fired the shots in self-defense.
WARNING: This video contains graphic video and sound that is disturbing. The video does not show the shooting itself, but it does include sound before and after shots were fired.
Jordan was called to 2011 South Campbell on September 2 because Michael was on the parking lot doing burnouts in his S-10 pickup and was armed with a long gun.
Body camera footage shows the officer pull up behind Michael’s pickup as he’s doing burnouts.
Corporal Jordan gets out of his patrol car and yells at Michael to show him his hands.
But Michael refuses, pointing a shotgun at Jordan.
Jordan fired seven shots.
The encounter only lasted about two seconds.
The body camera footage makes it difficult to show Michael with the gun in his hands or the actual shooting because the officer’s arm covers the camera.
But surveillance video from the Bass Pro Shops Catalog Outlet clearly shows Michael standing on the driver’s side of his truck with a shotgun pointed at the officer in his right arm before he points in the air with his left arm.
The footage released to the public does not show Michael get shot.
KTTS News has also edited out the shooting provided during the body cam footage.
In a release, Patterson says Michael placed Corporal Jordan “in reasonable fear of imminent death or serious physical injury” when he pointed the gun at him.
