COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri Supreme Court is ordering the Republican attorney general to stand down and allow an initiative petition to legalize abortion in the state to move forward.
Supreme Court judges on Thursday unanimously ruled against Attorney General Andrew Bailey.
Bailey was fighting with the Republican auditor over the estimated price tag of restoring abortion rights in the state.
Bailey says the cost to taxpayers could be a million times more than what the auditor predicted.
He refused to allow the amendment to move forward unless the auditor inflated his estimate.
A circuit court judge last month ordered Bailey to approve the auditor’s estimate.
Supreme Court judges affirmed the lower court’s decision.
