(KTTS News) — The first woman to represent Missouri in the U.S. Senate has died.

Former Senator and First Lady Jean Carnahan died after a brief illness.

She was 90.

Her husband, Governor Mel Carnahan, ran for the U.S. Senate in 2000.

But he died in a plane crash in October 2000, just one month before the election.

He won the election anyway, and Jean Carnahan was appointed to fill his seat in 2001.

She served until 2002.
