Springfield’s contract to hold some city prisoners in the Vernon County Jail runs out at the end of the month and it won’t be extended.
Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams says Vernon County has signed a new deal to hold prisoners from the Kansas City area.
The jail has been holding about 40 municipal prisoners there every day.
Williams tells KY3 he’s working with Vernon County to keep the inmates who’ve already been sentenced.
But the challenge is to find a place to keep the people who haven’t seen a judge locked up.
Williams says even though the contract is about to expire, the city still has the more dangerous criminals locked up.
