The Greenwood Blue Jays have made history, winning a championship at the Greenwood Blue and Gold Tournament in Springfield for the first time in 74 years of hosting the event.
And the show put on by 6-5 junior scoring sensation Aminu Mohammed Monday night at a packed JQH Arena was one for the record books.
(3) Greenwood 65 (1) Springfield Kickapoo 55:
Mohammed shattered two records in leading the Blue Jays to the Gold Division crown, scoring 49 points for the game, and finishing the tournament with 155 points.
The 49 points breaks the single game Blue and Gold scoring record set by Tim Williams (48 points) of Niangua in a quadruple overtime game in 1981.
By halftime, Mohammed had already broken Daniel Abreu’s tournament scoring record of 125 points set last year.
The Blue Jays held a 19-14 lead after one quarter, and went into the locker room at halftime up by four, 37-33.
Greenwood took a 50-47 advantage into the final quarter, but the Chiefs pulled within a point, 53-52, with just under three minutes remaining.
Mohammed drained a three pointer with 2:40 remaining to widen the lead to 56-53.
The junior, ranked among the most elite high school basketball players in the nation, hit two free throws with 2:12 to play to increase his team’s lead to five, 58-53.
But he wasn’t done yet.
Two more free throws by Mohammed with 1:05 left gave the Blue Jays a 60-53 lead, and two more with 53 seconds left put the game out of reach, 62-53.
But the final two shots from the foul line with 38 seconds remaining gave Mohammed 49 points and the single game record.
He could have made it 51, but was whistled for a double-dribble in the lane in the final seconds.
Greenwood had been to the finals three previous times, most recently facing Kickapoo in 1991, but lost all three times.
On this night, the Chiefs got 22 points from Anton Brookshire in a losing effort.
(4) Hartville 52, (6) Rogersville 46:
The Eagles win their first Blue and Gold championship since 1996.
The game was tight throughout, with the Eagles leading 14-9 after one quarter and 27-20 at the half.
The Wildcats cut the deficit to two, 32-30, at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Rogersville trailed by four, 44-40, with 1:34 left in regulation, but Hartville got a layup from Ryce Piper at the 1:17 mark to increase its lead to 46-40.
Eli Cook followed with a layup with 1:00 remaining to make it a 48-40 game, and held on for the victory.
Cody Mahan led the Eagles with 15 points, while Cade Blevins and Josh Linehan put in 16 each for Rogersville.
(4) Republic 59, (2) Ozark 50:
Republic led for much of the Gold Division Third Place contest, but Ozark stayed within single digits of the lead for much of the game.
Republic went ahead 10-5 after one quarter and led 20-13 at the half, before opening up an 11 point lead heading into the final minutes.
Race Looney’s 24 points led Republic, with A.J. Elliott scoring 13 for Ozark.
(2) Nixa 67, (1) Willard 39:
The two teams were tied 13-13 after one quarter, but Nixa outscored Willard 23-10 in the second frame to take a commanding lead at halftime, then led by more than 20 points down the stretch to win the Blue Division Third Place trophy.
Josh Mason’s 21 points led the Eagles, while Daniel Abreu, who just a year ago set the all time single season tournament scoring record, finished the game with 14 points.
