The suspect was found dead inside the convenience store, accounting for the fifth fatality.

In a news conference at Springfield Police Headquarters Monday morning, Williams said several reports starting coming in after 11:00 p.m. of shots fired at various locations in the city, including Battlefield and Lone Pine.

The shooter went to the convenience store and shot four people inside, killing three and injuring a fourth.

When officers responded to the scene, both were shot by the suspect.

One officer, Christopher Walsh, died at a local hospital, while the other, Josiah Overton, is being treated for non life threatening injuries.

Walsh had been with the department for more than three years and was an Army veteran.

He had been with the Army Reserves for 10 years.

Walsh was a Springfield native and attended Glendale and OTC.

He was 32.

Three innocent victims inside the store are dead, and the suspect was also found dead.

Chestnut Expressway remains shut down from Prince Lane to Belcrest Avenue while police investigate the scene.

Christopher Walsh is the first Springfield police officer to be shot and killed in the line of duty since the Young Brothers Massacre just outside of Brookline on January 2nd, 1932.

Here are the remarks from Chief Williams at Monday’s news conference:

Missouri Senator Roy Blunt has released a statement on the shooting:

“My thoughts are with the loved ones of all of the victims of last night’s attack in Springfield. I am grateful for the courage our law enforcement officers demonstrated as they rushed to the scene, and saddened by the loss of Springfield Police Officer Christopher Walsh. Officer Walsh lived a life of service to his country and his community. As a police officer and U.S. Army veteran, Officer Walsh exemplified the best of our nation. My thoughts are also with Officer Josiah Overton and the civilian victim who are being treated for their injuries. We are forever indebted to our law enforcement officers and their families for the tremendous sacrifices they make every day to keep us safe.”

Original Story: Springfield police confirm they’re investigating a homicide at a gas station in east Springfield, and KTTS News has learned one officer was shot and is at a local hospital.

Police shut down traffic for much of the overnight hours on Chestnut Expressway near Highway 65 after a shooting at the Kum & Go at 2885 east Chestnut.

Chestnut was still blocked off near the gas station as of 5:45 a.m.

More information is expected to be released at a news conference at police headquarters at 321 east Chestnut Expressway at 6 a.m. Monday.

Authorities are asking people to avoid this area as both Springfield police officers and Greene County Sheriff’s deputies respond to the scene.

Police made a brief statement at the scene, saying they started getting reports of shots fired around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

They say they are investigating a homicide and there are several victims, but wouldn’t release how many have been killed, or the condition of victims, or the condition of the officer.

We’ll provide additional updates as they become available.
