(KTTS News) — Utility companies and emergency management are offering some tips on what to do to prepare your home for this weekend’s winter blast.

Press Release from Springfield City Utilities

Winter weather conditions can rapidly change, bringing extreme cold, wintry precipitation and the possibility of utility services being impacted.

Should weather conditions affect operational issues, all areas of City Utilities have crews available to respond and resolve the situations as quickly as possible.

With extreme weather conditions forecast for later this week, it’s important to plan now for potential disruptions.

The following are a few steps you can take to prepare your home and family to stay safe and warm.

  • Seal all doors and windows – Until recently, weather conditions have been mild and there may be
doors and windows that have not been closed or sealed tightly.
  • Avoid frozen pipes – Open cabinet doors to allow air to circulate. Let cold water slowly drip from
the faucet and don’t set temperatures below 55 degrees.
  • In the event of a power outage – Report your power outage through My Account or by calling CU
    at 1-888-863-9001.
  • If using a generator – Never use a generator inside a home, garage, basement, or another partially
enclosed area. Operate a generator outside and away from doors, window, or vents that could allow
    carbon monoxide to come indoors.
  • Update your home emergency kit – Be sure you have the necessities you may need in the event of
prolonged extreme weather conditions. Details on winter weather preparedness are available from
the Springfield-Greene County OEM. If traveling, inspect the emergency kit in your vehicle.
  • Remember to check on family, neighbors, and the elderly who may need assistance. Monitor
weather conditions on your preferred media outlet.

Before weather conditions arrive, take time to sign-up for City Utilities’ My Account to receive real-time
updates during an outage, monitor usage and find ways to save.
